Traditional Metis Foods and Food Preparation

The Métis people have a rich culinary tradition that includes dishes like Rubaboo soup, Bannock bread, and Pemmican, a preserved meat high in protein. They utilized communal food practices, sharing extra wild meat and borrowing staple foods, and adapted their cooking methods seasonally, often moving cooking outdoors during summer. Traditional foods also included various berries, wild plants, and fish, with preservation methods such as drying, smoking, and canning. Métis cuisine reflects a blend of indigenous and European influences, emphasizing resourcefulness and community.
