Haisla Camp Connects Youth with their Culture

In this article, the Haisla Nation’s revived cultural camp at Weewanie Hot Springs is showcased as a transformative experience where 17 youth immersed themselves in traditional practices, language, and environmental stewardship. Supported by the Haisla Nation Council and MaPP, the camp focused on teaching respect for natural resources while fostering self-governance and community development skills. Participants engaged in activities like salmon processing, cedar weaving, and traditional drumming, reconnecting with their cultural heritage and territory. The camp left a lasting impact on both youth and staff, inspiring plans for future initiatives to strengthen ties to Haisla traditions and promote sustainable development.
