Gitxsan and Secwépemc Resilience to Climate Change
Indigenous communities in British Columbia, like the Gitxsan and Secwépemc Nations, are experiencing significant impacts on their seasonal rounds due to climate change, which affects cultural practices and food security. Research highlights three major themes: shifting seasonal patterns, varying rates of change across territories, and the resilience demonstrated through traditional resource management. The Secwépemc, facing faster and more pronounced changes due to colonial impacts and ecological instability, are adapting by revitalizing traditional practices and asserting territorial connections. Similarly, the Gitxsan leverage stable ecosystems to maintain traditional activities, illustrating how Indigenous knowledge and practices can foster climate resilience and sustainability.
