Indigenous Womens Heart Health: Lessons from Gatherings with Elders and Knowledge Holders

This resource examines the disproportionately high burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among Indigenous peoples in Canada, particularly Indigenous women, due to social, economic, environmental, and cultural factors. Recognizing a lack of research and culturally relevant health interventions, researchers partnered with Indigenous Elders and Knowledge-Holders to develop community-driven, arts-based prevention programs. Through talking and drumming circles, participants explored heart health concerns, shared knowledge, and identified culturally safe strategies for education and disease prevention. The findings highlight the importance of addressing emotional trauma, improving cultural safety in healthcare, and increasing awareness to better support Indigenous women’s heart health.
