Indigenous-led farm, Tea Creek, leads the way in food sovereignty

Jacob Beaton and Jessica Ouellette transformed their rural property in Kitwanga into Tea Creek, an Indigenous-led farm and training center promoting food sovereignty and holistic community development. Tea Creek offers programs in trades, horticulture, and traditional skills, benefiting over 1,200 Indigenous visitors in 2022 while donating 20,000 pounds of vegetables to the community. Recognized internationally, including by the United Nations, the initiative addresses barriers Indigenous communities face while enhancing sustainability and resilience. Despite funding challenges, Tea Creek continues to expand its impact, fostering mental, physical, and cultural well-being through education, food security, and environmental stewardship.
