Lake Babine Nation stands up to Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Lake Babine Nation is working tirelessly to protect and preserve Skeena sockeye salmon, an essential resource for their culture, food security, and economy, amid challenges of declining salmon populations, warming waters, and bureaucratic hurdles. Despite historical injustices like the destruction of traditional weirs and forced relocations, the community has maintained their knowledge and practices, including fish camps and conservation efforts, passing these skills to younger generations. In 2020, Lake Babine Nation signed a landmark agreement with Canada and B.C., reclaiming jurisdiction over their lands and waters, but funding delays and disputes with Fisheries and Oceans Canada have hindered progress. Amidst these challenges, the Nation continues advocating for sustainable fisheries, teaching traditional methods, and enforcing closures to ensure salmon survival for future generations.
